Fresh initiative lends a helping hand to local community groups in dire need of hands-on assistance

An exciting new initiative inspired by the popular BBC show ‘DIY SOS’ is set to launch in Wigan Borough. Known as the Community SOS program, this innovative scheme will connect local community groups with businesses eager to give back to the community. Building on the success of Wigan Council’s Our Town Community Noticeboard, which links volunteers with small-scale projects, the annual Community SOS will cater to larger requests. These projects may require the expertise and support of multiple teams over a couple of days, including refurbishments, redecorating, and groundworks.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities, expressed his pride in launching the Community SOS program, highlighting the immense community spirit present in Wigan Borough. He eagerly anticipates the collaboration of various organizations to benefit the local people. Authorities are urging local tradespeople and businesses to spare a day or two of their time to participate in one significant partnership project each year.

Furthermore, community groups who would benefit from this scheme are encouraged to apply for support. Councillor Susan Gambles, cabinet member for housing, emphasized the willingness of businesses and organizations to lend a helping hand. This initiative serves as an ideal opportunity to connect them with the community network. The housing and communities teams take pride in leading the way with this innovative scheme, which will greatly benefit voluntary organizations in the borough.

All applications from community groups will undergo review by a panel of experts. Once approved, council teams will coordinate a date and facilitate the partnership between businesses and community groups for the annual project. Community groups interested in applying can express their interest via the provided website before Friday, March 15th. Businesses looking to offer their support can register their interest by contacting [email protected].
