Grant funding to expand community library accessibility to a wider range of families

A group of volunteers has successfully secured a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, allowing a community library to continue operating and even add a pram store. Yellow Door Library, located in Clifton Street Community Centre, Poolstock, has been open since December 2022, attracting visitors four days a week. With the support of Wigan Council officers, the library received funding from the National Lottery, ensuring its future and enabling the installation of a convenient pram store. The library team hopes that this addition will encourage more parents and caregivers with young children to make use of the space. The idea for Yellow Door Library originated from Kathryn Catterall, who had previously run a successful book-sharing box called Ashdale Little Library from her front garden. Kathryn, who resides in Hawkley Hall, expressed her gratitude for the funding and the positive impact it will have on the library. The library project was made possible through a combination of Brighter Borough funding, support from local businesses and schools, and the dedication of a team of volunteers who refurbished the space, painted, and built the shelves. Councillor Chris Ready, the cabinet member for communities at Wigan Council, commended Yellow Door Library on their successful grant application and highlighted the council’s commitment to supporting the voluntary, faith, community, and social enterprise sector.
