Remembrance in Stockport 2022

Commemorative services and events taking place across the borough on Remembrance Sunday, Sunday 13 November 2022.

Together with local branches of the Royal British Legion and local churches, the council has helped to organise some of the commemorative services and events in the borough on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Armistice Day – Friday, 11 November 2022

Residents are welcome to attend and observe a two-minute silence on Armistice Day, Friday, 11 November. At 11am, the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor David Wilson, will observe the silence on the steps of Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Wellington Road South, Stockport, SK3 8AB. To mark the beginning and end of the silence, maroon rockets will be launched from the civic complex. The sound should be heard from up to two miles away, and residents and shoppers should not be alarmed. The Art Gallery will be open from 10am on Friday, 11 November, for people to pay their respects.

Remembrance Sunday – Sunday, 13 November 2022

On Remembrance Sunday, The Mayor of Stockport will lead the borough in paying respects at the Civic Act of Remembrance on the steps of Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Wellington Road South, Stockport, SK3 8AB. At precisely 11am, there will be a two-minute silence, beginning with the Last Post and ending with the Reveille. Following prayers, hymns and reflections, wreaths will be laid on the steps of the War Memorial. The Art Gallery will be open from 9.30am on Sunday, 13 November, for people to pay their respects.

Councillor David Wilson, Mayor of Stockport, said: “To live in hearts we leave behind Is not to die” (Campbell, ‘Hallowed Ground’).

As Mayor of Stockport, it will be my honour to proudly lead Stockport’s Civic Remembrance commemoration. May our town come together, to recall with solemnity and pride, all who fell in the conflicts of yesteryear to defend and secure the freedoms that we enjoy today.”

The Mayor is asking residents to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal, which provides the primary source of funds to maintain the Royal British Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes.

10.25am – a procession of service units, ex-servicemen’s, civilian and youth organisations from the Armoury to the War Memorial
10.45am – civic procession from Stockport Town Hall to the War Memorial
11am – two-minute silence

Please note that there may be some temporary road closures in place for a short period of time whilst services and events are taking place.
Please be advised that there is a National Service of Remembrance held at The Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, which will be broadcast live and available for you to view.
