City and England captain wins award for a second consecutive year

Manchester City’s women’s captain Steph Houghton won the Women’s Player of the Year Award once again at the 2020 Northwest Football Awards.

The English centre-back featured in every game last season for the club winning the FA Women’s Cup.

Houghton beat out Blackburn’s Saffron Jordan, Burnley’s Lauren Bracewell, Liverpool’s Rachel Furness, and Manchester United’s Lauren James for the award.

This is her second straight win in this category having won in 2019.

Houghton expressed her gratitude for the award.

“I just want to say a big ‘thank you’ for all of your votes and also to the judging panel for selecting me as the Northwest Player of the Year,” she says.

“I’m gutted we can’t have an actual evening together but I’m looking forward to next year’s.

“Stay safe and well and we’ll see you all soon.”

Already this season Houghton’s made history becoming the first player to win 100 games in the FA Women’s Super League.

Since joining City in 2014 the England skippers won three Women’s FA Cups, three FA Continental Cups, and a Women’s Super League title in 2016.

She’s also won a bronze medal for England at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. (JSL)
