Council congratulates County on record-equaling feat

Stockport Council have congratulated Stockport County on their record- equalling match winning league run.

Dave Challinor’s team equalled the EFL League 2 winning record, winning 12 leagues games in a row. The run came to an end after they lost to Newport County at the weekend.

The Hatters now share the record with Luton Town, also nicknamed the Hatters, following the Bedfordshire’s team run in the 2001/2 season.

As a result, Stockport are now five points clear at the top of League Two – 19 games into the 46-match season.

Cllr Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “It really is a fantastic achievement by everyone involved at the club and has set the team on course for what we all hope will be a season of success.

“There is a real buzz about the club and the town at the moment and long may that continue.”

In a recent article in ‘The Athletic’, the club’s owner, Mark Stott, spoke about his hopes for the future and how the club is hoping to grow.

“We are going into the schools, trying to grow the club. I drive around the different areas of Stockport and the most exciting thing for me is that, if there are 15 kids playing football (in the street or a park), six of them have County kits on. Its unheard of,” he told The Athletic.

The club has also announced the launch of ‘Stockport County Armed Forces Football’, which is a new programme of free football sessions for the armed forces community at Reddish Vale High School from 6pm to 7pm on Wednesdays.

Sessions are for players of all ages and abilities and will give participants a chance to socialise with other people from military backgrounds. There will also be the opportunity to represent Stockport County in various fixtures and tournaments.
