Exciting developments are on the horizon for Stockport’s High Street

Ambitious plans continue to progress, defying the challenges faced by the retail industry

Amidst this positive momentum, Stockport proudly announces the commencement of work on the transformation of the former BHS department store. This ambitious project aims to create contemporary, state-of-the-art units that will soon be home to two renowned names in the retail world: JD Sports and Poundland. The grand unveiling of these new additions is scheduled for early 2024, occupying the ground floor units. Meanwhile, the first floor unit is reserved for an intriguing and undisclosed venture, set to elevate Merseyway to new heights.

High Street giants are increasingly recognizing Stockport’s potential for transformation and eagerly seek to be part of this exciting journey. Already, IKEA has opened an innovative concept store in Merseyway this March, while Marks and Spencer has returned to the town center with an impressive 16,000 sq ft food hall at Peel Retail Park.

The redevelopment of the former BHS store promises to revitalize the retail landscape, with significant enhancements such as re-fronting the building along Merseyway and the introduction of a new ground floor entrance on Prince’s Street. Additionally, improvements to the immediate public realm will further enhance the shopping experience. Anticipated to be completed in Spring 2024, this endeavor marks a key milestone in the Council’s long-term vision for the regeneration of Merseyway and the Town Centre.

Exciting times lie ahead for Stockport, with the completion of public realm improvements on Merseyway later this year and the eagerly awaited launch of an Innovation Centre in August, poised to become a thriving hub for new businesses. The Future High Street Fund, in collaboration with Stockroom, has already set in motion the repurposing of eight former retail units around Adlington Walk into a new ‘Learning and Discovery Centre’.

The former Next store is also nearing completion, with its transformation into the ‘Merseyway Innovation Centre’ expected to open its doors in August this year, providing an ideal environment for startups and small businesses to flourish.

The entire community eagerly anticipates the upcoming Autumn, as it heralds the completion of the public realm improvements on Merseyway. Meanwhile, the redevelopment of the former M&S store, now known as ‘Stok,’ has reached its conclusion, offering an impressive 62,000 sq ft of workspace ready for occupancy.

Stockport Town Centre is buzzing with construction activity and a spirit of renewal, as it takes significant strides towards becoming an outstanding destination for all to enjoy.
