Students in Manchester could face a curfew if they breach COVID rules

University of Manchester urging students to follow current restrictions

The University of Manchester is getting tough on students breaching the coronavirus restrictions.

They’ll be issuing stiff penalties for anyone breaking the rules.

They’re giving “active consideration” to reports of social distancing measures not being followed at the Fallowfield hall.

Of the nearly 8,000 of the 40,000 university students living in the 19 halls, 7 are in Fallowfield.

The COVID restrictions in Manchester mean that you can’t mix with anyone outside of your household or support bubble.

The institution sent an email to students recently.

They say that police dealt with “significant breaches” over the weekend, issuing some fixed penalty notices.

“If students do not comply, they will face disciplinary action, which could lead to expulsion, and we will not hesitate to involve the police.”

A university spokesman says they need to respect social distancing rules to stay safe.

The National Union of Students (NUS) recently weighed in on the situation with a statement

It says all universities have “procedures in place to deal with misconduct and these are appropriate to be able to deal with any rule breaches”.

The number of deaths due to COVID in Greater Manchester is now over 2,200. (JSL)
