Fresh schedule announced for the renovation of Crompton Place

The local authority took ownership of Crompton Place in 2018, initiating the intricate process of assisting leaseholders in finding new accommodations to pave the way for demolition work.

Among the remaining leaseholders is M&S, which still has access rights to its former store through Crompton Place’s roof and the bridge over Hotel Street. This legal arrangement is in effect until 2027, but the council is exploring options to reach an early surrender of the lease.

If approved, this could enable construction to commence once Primark finishes its relocation to Market Place Shopping Centre by late 2024 or early 2025. The initial phases of the project will involve clearing out the building’s interior before focusing on its exterior.

Regular updates on the progress will be provided by the council, and a public consultation will be held on the future use of this crucial site. The space will remain a significant part of the town centre’s core before, during, and after the regeneration work.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Nick Peel, remarked, “The redevelopment of Crompton Place offers a unique opportunity in the heart of our town centre’s regeneration, and I am confident that everyone will be pleased with this significant development.”

He added, “If approved, this will allow us to replace an outdated and unattractive building with something that all residents of Bolton can take pride in. It also presents a chance to enhance Victoria Square and establish a direct link to Bradshawgate with various structures and open spaces on the site.”

Deputy Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Akhtar Zaman, emphasised the importance of evolving town centres beyond just retail in the face of increasing online shopping trends. He highlighted the council’s efforts to create a dynamic destination where people can live, work, study, dine out, and enjoy cultural experiences.

The cabinet is scheduled to review the report at a meeting on Monday, March 4th.
