Oldham Leads the Way on Sustainability

Cllr Abdul Jabbar with the Greater Manchester Green Sector Board, Councillors Tom Ross and Alan Quinn, and Northern Roots staff at the Environment Centre in Oldham.

Cllr Abdul Jabbar, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, welcomed the Greater Manchester Green City Board to the newly renovated Environment Centre.

Members of the Green City Region Board, including Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council and Greater Manchester’s Green City Region portfolio holder, Councillor Alan Quinn, Bury Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Operations, and Mark Atherton, Director of Environment for GMCA, met at the Environment Centre to discuss opportunities for green growth across Greater Manchester.

Following the meeting, Cllr Jabbar, who also chairs the Northern Roots Board, led a tour of the nearby Northern Roots site alongside Anna da Silva, Chief Executive of Northern Roots. The group explored the Phase 1 Urban Farm before walking through the Phase 2 area, where the new Visitor Centre is taking shape.

The visit highlighted how Northern Roots is already delivering benefits for Oldham and the wider region, including new skills, training, job opportunities and the creation of a unique visitor destination.

Cllr Jabbar said: “Oldham is proud to be leading the way on sustainability across Greater Manchester. It was a pleasure to host the Green City region board here in Oldham today. The Environment Centre and Northern Roots are fantastic examples of how we can turn ambition into action, cut carbon emissions and create real opportunities for local people. We look forward to continuing this work with our partners as we move towards a greener and fairer future.”

Oldham Council will continue to work closely with partners across Greater Manchester to share best practice. Together, these efforts will ensure Oldham remains at the forefront of the region’s transition to a low carbon economy while creating opportunities that benefit local residents and businesses.
