Manchester has welcomed the submission of the UK’s bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 which could see tournament matches played here in the city at the Etihad Stadium.
The city has been officially confirmed today as one of the proposed host cities for the tournament, which would be the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted in the country since 1966 and the largest single-sport event ever staged in the UK.
If the bid is successful, the tournament would bring hundreds of thousands of football fans and visitors to Manchester from around the world – also providing a massive economic boost to the city, with hotels, hospitality, the retail sector and more all set to benefit.
Alongside a commitment to deliver the most inclusive, inspiring, and globally connected FIFA Women’s World Cup ever, the tournament would also provide unrivalled opportunities to ensure a meaningful and lasting legacy both nationally and locally – growing the women’s game, uniting communities, and proving that football is a sport for everyone.
Councillor Bev Craig said: “Manchester is known the world over as a great footballing city, and with a long history also of championing women in sport including women’s football, we’re fully behind the UK’s bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035.
“If successful, the tournament would be the biggest single-sport event in UK history, connecting every part of the UK and inspiring fans worldwide including here in Manchester.
“Pitched alongside a commitment to deliver the most inclusive, inspiring and globally connected FIFA Women’s World Cup ever, the opportunities it would provide for a meaningful and lasting legacy are also tremendous – growing the women’s game, uniting communities, and proving that football is truly a sport for everyone.
“We’re really excited by the bid and the opportunities the tournament presents both on and off the pitch – for players, for fans, football tourists and others – alongside the massive boost it would give to the UK economy as a whole and that of host city regions.
“We couldn’t be prouder to be playing our part in supporting and helping kick-off the bid for the UK to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 and will be backing the bid team all the way.”
