Major improvements for Council sheltered accommodation in Leigh

Works are set to start on a multi-million pound makeover of a Leigh sheltered accommodation scheme.

The £4.5m upgrade project will see Moss Bank Court remodelled to make bigger, brighter and more accessible homes.

The Faith Street facility, first opened in 1982, provides sheltered accommodation for older residents.

Councillor Susan Gambles, cabinet portfolio holder for housing and welfare, said: “Moss Bank Court is home to a lovely community, and I think everyone would agree that this building needs some real TLC to ensure that every resident has a safe, comfortable home that meets modern standards.

“This refurbishment is set to deliver that in spades with the plans promising a real ‘wow’ factor, including a new bright entranceway, leading to remodelled apartments which will be larger and brighter, with more accessible modern kitchens and bathrooms. Patio doors and juliette balconies will also be installed, leading to much-improved communal outdoor space.

“We are taking this opportunity to also install a new lift and refresh the lounge area, ensuring this will continue to be high quality accommodation now and for the future.”

Communal areas will be fully refurbished including the lounge, kitchen and hallways. Solar panels will also be installed during the works, alongside new heating, giving residents better control of their energy use.

Coun Gambles, added: “These improvements are being funded through the Housing Revenue Account which is totally separate account to the wider council budget, funded by council tenant’s rents and services charges.

“That is why it has been so important that tenants are at the heart of this process, to ensure the investment delivers for them and for the future. Council tenants who currently live at Moss Bank Court have been fully involved throughout, from choosing décor and discussing layout changes to individual homes.

“This project promises to deliver better homes for our tenants who have been involved in every step of the planning, and I cannot wait to come back and see the transformation.”

The works are expected to start this April and complete in summer 2027, and will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption for tenants.
