ITV drama turns to Manchester Met scientist for chemical pollution expertise

A Manchester Met chemical pollution expert has helped shape the scientific storyline of the latest series of ITV drama ‘After the Flood’, which explores the release of toxic chemicals in the community.

Dr Dave Megson, Reader in Environmental Chemistry and Forensics, was brought in as a chemical pollution expert to advise the production team on the scientific accuracy of the storyline.

The series first came to our screens in 2024, with the drama following the investigation into a body that is washed up in the village after a flash flood. The newly released second series takes place one year later with a central aspect of the story relating to who may be responsible for PFAS pollution in the local area.

Often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’, these substances exist in the environment for decades and have become a growing concern following industrial pollution and flooding events in the UK and worldwide.

Dr Megson was approached at the start of 2025 and was asked to help shape the story with scientific accuracy.

Dr Megson says: “I was sent through a script last April to look through and review from a chemical pollution perspective. The production team had originally chosen a chemical that didn’t behave in the way the storyline required, so I suggested alternatives that would remain scientifically credible while allowing the drama to develop as intended.

“I also supported the team by providing visual examples of different types of chemical pollution and advising on the testing procedures that would be required when looking for these materials. It was a fascinating project to be part of, and a real privilege to collaborate with other experts to help ensure the science behind the series was credible. I can’t wait to see how the scripts I helped shape are transformed into a TV show.”
