410 years of Salford foster carers’ dedication celebrated during Foster Care Fortnight 2024
Long service foster care awards are being held during Foster Care Fortnight 2024 (13 to 26 May) to highlight all the fantastic support people who foster with Salford City Council give to vulnerable children.
The annual awards on 23 May are held to recognise and praise the commitment and achievements of Salford foster carers.
Awards are being given to 38 carers for long service, ranging from five to 30 years. There will also be two special awards, which are newcomer of the year and a dedication to fostering.
The total number of year the carers who will be attending the event have fostered adds up to 410 years!
Being a foster carer can be very challenging, but also very rewarding. Children can come from lots of different backgrounds and situations and their needs are all different, but what they all need is love, a safe home and a caring structure. Many children have developed into positive and hopeful individuals who are now progressing well at school and with friends.
Foster Care Fortnight is an annual UK-wide foster care awareness raising campaign led by charity The Fostering Network.
Salford City Council is using this fortnight to highlight how important foster carers are and how rewarding a role it is, as well as recruit new foster carers. There are currently not enough foster carers available in the right location, at the right time to meet the needs of the children in care, both in Salford and across the UK. This means some children do not have all their needs met or have to live far away from everything familiar to them.
Councillor Jim Cammell, Lead Member for Children’s and Young People’s Services, said: “Foster Care Fortnight provides a great opportunity to celebrate our amazing foster carers. They provide safe, nurturing, and supportive homes for vulnerable children, paving the way for brighter futures. Our dedicated foster carers, and the Foster for Salford team, consistently exceed expectations, offering unwavering support to the local community and its most vulnerable young people. During this fortnight, we aim to spotlight the remarkable impact of foster carers and those who support them, showcasing their profound ability to transform lives.”
As well as attending events to promote fostering to the public, the council’s Foster for Salford team will be holding the following events where people can come and ask any questions about fostering:
