Work has officially started on Oldham’s new park, Tommyfield Park, marking a major milestone in the regeneration of the area.

The five-acre park is being delivered by construction company Casey on behalf of Oldham Council and will transform the former market site into a vibrant, welcoming green space for residents, workers and visitors.

Tommyfield Park will be a fully self sustaining space designed with nature and people in mind.

The park takes its name from the historic Tommyfield Market, which has been part of Oldham life for more than 200 years and is now preparing to move into its new home inside The Spindles.

Leader of Oldham Council, Cllr Arooj Shah said: “Seeing work begin on Tommyfield Park is a really special moment for Oldham. This site has such deep roots in our town’s history and we are now turning it into something that will serve current and future generations.

“Tommyfield has always been about community and that spirit will live on through this new green space. It will be a place for people to pause, spend time together and enjoy nature in the town centre. This is another important step forward in our wider regeneration journey and we are excited to see the park take shape over the coming months.”

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, Cllr Abdul Jabbar MBE said: “Sustainability is at the heart of this project. Tommyfield Park is being designed to be a fully self-sustaining green space that supports biodiversity, uses energy responsibly and helps tackle the climate challenges we all face.

“By investing in greener spaces like this in the town centre, we are improving quality of life for residents while making sure our regeneration plans are environmentally responsible and built to last.”
