Update on Bury indoor market hall
Bury Council has appointed consultants to carry out an independent appraisal to determine the best course of action regarding the future of Bury’s indoor market hall.
Mace will be looking at the options that were presented to traders and the public earlier this year, as well as other options, and have been asked to bring back their report in September.
The hall was closed on health and safety grounds last October when RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) was discovered in the ceiling.
The large outdoor market, and the fish and meat hall, have remained open throughout, and traders on the indoor market relocated to alternative premises.
The council has asked Mace to present the full cost of all the options, advise on the best use of public funding, and consider the most minimal disruption to traders and customers.
Traders are being contacted to ensure that they can give their views before any decision is made.
Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture, the economy and skills, said: “It is essential that the best decision about the indoor market hall is reached, and that everyone has the chance to have their say before that decision is made.
“With the new flexi-hall and improvements we are making to the wider market, we are determined to ensure that our famous and historic Bury Market will thrive and prosper for many more generations to come.”
