University Professor named as one of HR’s most influential thinkers

A Manchester Met academic has been named as one of the most influential players in the field of people strategy, with ideas and actions that are shaping practices in HR, both in the UK and globally.
Carol Atkinson, Professor of Human Resource Management at Manchester Met, has been nominated in the ‘Thinkers’ list of the HR Magazine’s Most Influential.
HR Most Influential is an annual list compiled by HR magazine’s editorial team and research partners Hult Ashridge Executive Education. Professor Atkinson features amongst national and international practitioners, thought leaders and influencers in the sector.
As part of the University’s Centre for Decent Work and Productivity, her most recent research centres around the quality of adult social care amidst the current funding crisis.
The adult social care crisis is a global issue, exacerbated by inadequate funding and poor working conditions for care workers.
Improving working conditions, such as secure employment and decent wages, is crucial for better recruitment, retention, and care quality. Through Professor Atkinson’s research it has been revealed that each year around 30% of care workers in England leave their job, with many leaving the sector completely.
Her research advocates for systemic changes to ensure sustainable funding and high standards of care, stressing the importance of political engagement and public support.
Professor Atkinson said: “I am honoured to be named in the HR Most Influential Thinkers list for this year. Through the research we have conducted we have seen the problems that exist in the adult social care system, and I hope our work continues to highlight the crisis in social care and the need for good work on a wider level.
“By influencing policy and practice in adult social care, our research has the potential to reach government bodies and other institutions to bring about real change.”
