Stockport’s COVID Community Commemoration Project contemplates the impact of the pandemic
During the pandemic, communities in the UK have united to remember and honour those lost, with Stockport Council supporting local initiatives to commemorate the borough’s losses and celebrate community spirit. The COVID Commemoration Project has seen 30 projects proposed, with each ward in Stockport hosting at least one memorial. From memorial benches to art exhibitions, the projects highlight the resilience and kindness shown by Stockport residents during the pandemic. The latest completed project in Manor Ward features a seating area at Vernon Park, incorporating elements of a pebble memorial created during lockdown. Other projects include art installations, garden spaces, and plaques dedicated to the NHS heroes who worked tirelessly throughout the crisis. The community-led initiatives aim to create lasting tributes that honour the memories of those lost and the solidarity shown during challenging times.
