Residents now able to recycle more plastic items in their burgundy bins
From today (Monday 14 October) Bolton Council’s waste and recycling service can accept most pots, tubs, trays and cartons in the burgundy bin.
Common examples include fruit juice cartons, yoghurt pots, ice-cream/butter/margarine tubs and clear plastic trays for meat, fruit and vegetables.
All items must be emptied and rinsed.
The recycling changes are in line with the rest of the region as the changes apply from today across Greater Manchester.
Household items that are recyclable in the burgundy bin are:
- Plastic pots (yoghurt, soup, hair gel etc)
- Plastic tubs (margarine, laundry powder, chocolates etc)
- Plastic trays of any colour (raw and cooked meat, fruit and veg punnets etc)
- Plastic bottles (milk, pop, cleaning products, shampoo etc)
- Glass bottles and jars
- Food tins and drinks cans
However, there are still some items which will still need to go in the general waste (grey) bin:
- Plastic bags
- Plastic film
- Bubble wrap
- Crisp packets
Cllr Richard Silvester, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said:
“As a council we’re committed to doing everything we can locally to tackle the climate change crisis.
“From a recycling point of view, as a borough we perform well, our recycling rate is 49.5%, with the national average at 43.3% and we want to continue this success.
“I’d also like to remind residents that all recyclable plastics must be emptied and rinsed before being put in the burgundy bin.”
