Oldham Council Goes for Gold in Veteran Support

Oldham Council is increasing its support for veterans as it works towards securing the prestigious Gold Award in the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme. The Council has also renewed its pledge to the Armed Forces Community by officially re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant.
The signing ceremony was attended by Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah, Mayor Zahid Chauhan, alongside senior council officers. They were joined by members of the Armed Forces, including Major Eddy Hardaker, two cadets and Louisa Blakemore from the Ministry of Defence.
The Covenant represents the Council’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that serving personnel, veterans and their families are treated fairly and receive the support they deserve. Key commitments include:
· Ensuring they are not disadvantaged when accessing public services.
· Providing additional support for those who are injured or bereaved.
Cllr Arooj Shah said: “Oldham has always stood proudly with our Armed Forces. By renewing this Covenant, we are reaffirming our commitment to veterans, reservists and military families. Their dedication and sacrifices deserve not only recognition but meaningful action.”
Oldham Council first signed the Covenant in 2013, and this latest renewal further strengthens its pledge. The Council is proud to hold the Silver Award in the Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme and is now working towards achieving the Gold Award.
Recently, the Council has partnered with Oldham Community Leisure to offer veterans discounted access to Oldham Active’s five wellbeing centres. These special memberships provide veterans with access to over 150 group exercise classes, gyms, racket sports, swimming and sauna facilities. The offer, which is free for the first two months, is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to improve physical activity and mental wellbeing across the borough. — Oldham veterans given discounted use of leisure centres | Oldham Council
Major Eddy Hardaker, an Oldhamer from the 75 Engineer Regiment, who has served in the Armed Forces since 1979, said: “It is fantastic to see Oldham Council reaffirming its commitment. The Armed Forces Community has given so much, and it is crucial that they receive the recognition and support they deserve.”
As part of its ongoing efforts, Oldham Council is also encouraging local businesses to sign the Covenant and join the mission to support the Armed Forces Community. Guidance is available for any organisation interested in getting involved. For more information, visit: www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk.
