New play area opens in Oldham town centre

Families in Oldham can now enjoy a new play area in the heart of the town centre, delivered as part of the ongoing town centre regeneration.
The project was supported in part by funding from the Mayor’s Challenge Fund.
The play area is fully integrated into the surrounding public area and has been designed so children of all ages can get involved. It has fun features like dance chimes and a spinning boulder, with whirling bobbins that celebrate Oldham’s industrial past. There’s a slide, swings, jumping discs, a mini roundabout and space for games and play. The area is surrounded by plants and includes rocks for balancing, jumping and exploring.
Natural materials such as rocks are widely used in modern play design because they offer developmental and sensory benefits. They support imaginative play, help children build balance and coordination and give them the chance to learn how to navigate real world terrain in a safe, managed setting.
Safety has been a priority throughout the design process. Play specialists, engineers and designers have worked closely together to shape the space and select the right equipment for children of all ages. All features meet national safety standards that help keep children safe while still giving them room to explore and take on new challenges.
Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council said: “Our new play area is a brilliant addition to the town centre. It’s a space where children can play and families can enjoy time together. It’s heartening to see how much people loved the previous space, and I believe the new play area with its updated equipment will be equally enjoyed by all.”
