New Kitchens and Bathrooms for Bury Council Homes

Over the next year, hundreds of Bury council homes will receive new and upgraded kitchens, bathrooms and windows.

The refurbishments are part of a £20 million investment into Bury’s housing stock after Six Town Housing was brought back into the council February of this year.

The proposed work will improve homes, increase energy efficiency and reduce the need for routine repairs.

The improvement works have been heavily influenced by tenants responding to their needs and listening to their thoughts on how best to improve homes.

The planned improvements include:

  • 565 homes will get replacement windows, doors, pointing and lintels.
  • 138 will have replacement kitchens, bathrooms or heating fitted.
  • 386 homes will get replacement roofing.
  • 326 will see improvements to communal areas.
  • 314 homes will have carbon reduction measures installed.

Cath, a tenant who recently had a new kitchen installed told us how supportive the team was throughout the process. Cath said: “Kelly my tenant liaison was amazing she was so helpful throughout all the works, even offered to help with my washing after one of my kids was ill. I don’t think I would have coped as well as I did without her support. The team were great and now everything is sorted it has made life so much easier, they listened to me when I requested the cooker to be moved so I can see when my kids enter the kitchen while I’m cooking and keep everyone safe.”

Councillor Cummins, cabinet member for housing services, said: “I am delighted that we can improve and modernise so many homes across our borough. We want to ensure all our tenants feel comfortable and safe wherever they live and these improvements will go a long way to achieve that. We have lots of exciting work coming up, including the building of new affordable housing which will further our efforts to provide the people of Bury with accessible and quality housing for now and for future generations.”
