New contractor appointed to help residents recycle more waste

A new mixed recycling contractor has been appointed to help residents recycle more waste in Wigan Borough.
Last month, Wigan Council’s cabinet approved the appointment of H.W Martin Waste Ltd as the borough’s new operator to recycle our packaging.
With the contract set to mobilise on Wednesday, 1st April, this means that residents will soon be able to recycle more items in their brown bin.
Councillor Paul Prescott, portfolio holder for planning, environmental services and transport, said: “The appointment of H.W Martin Waste is a significant step forward in our efforts to improve recycling rates across our borough and make recycling even easier for residents.
“With more items able to be recycled in the brown bin, this new approach will go a long way to making recycling packaging as simple as possible and more economical.”
From next month, the changes mean that as well as glass, cans, and plastic bottles, residents may also use their brown bin to recycle plastic bags and wrappings, crisp packets and cartons, toothpaste and tomato puree tubes.
These changes are possible due to improved technology at recycling facilities. Although more items will be able to be recycled in the brown bin, these products must be clean, dry, and free of food residue, and put in the bin loose. To allow more items to be put in your bin, please squash your tins and bottles flat.
With tens of thousands of tonnes of waste safely recycled in our borough every year, it is important to follow these instructions to ensure that we reduce the amount of waste sent to disposal, improve our recycling rates, and create a more sustainable future for everyone.
