More electric buses for the Bee Network

Go North West, in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), will introduce 19 new electric double-decker buses to the Bee Network on 5 January 2025. This expansion increases Go North West’s electric fleet to 69 buses, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport in Greater Manchester.

Manufactured in the UK by WrightBus, these zero-emission buses are equipped with state-of-the-art features designed to enhance passenger comfort and safety. These include audio-visual next stop announcements, two wheelchair bays, anti-slip flooring, a passenger hearing loop system, and USB chargers at every seat.

The new buses will operate on routes 472 and 474, serving Bury and Ramsbottom. By replacing smaller vehicles, they will reduce potential overcrowding as the Bee network continues to grow and contribute significantly to the region’s clean air targets.

Nigel Featham, Managing Director of Go North West, commented: “We are delighted to expand our electric bus fleet, promoting cleaner air in Greater Manchester, reduced carbon emissions and more comfortable journeys for passengers. This investment underlines our commitment to working with TfGM and local communities to ensure Greater Manchester has one of the very best bus networks in the UK.”

Stephen Rhodes, TfGM’s Director of Bus, said: “The way people get around Greater Manchester is changing, with the Bee Network unlocking a green revolution with cleaner, greener and more reliable services, reinforced by buses and depots being electrified at pace.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, Leader of Bury Council, added: ” The Ramsbottom Circular is one of the best-used bus routes in our borough, and this is great news for passengers. Modern electric vehicles, with better facilities and good for the environment – it really is a win-win situation.”

This initiative is part of Greater Manchester’s ambitious plans to create the country’s largest integrated transport system, seamlessly combining buses, trams, cycling, and walking routes. The goal is to make travel more accessible and environmentally friendly for those who live, visit and do business in the City Region.
