Manchester Celebrates Extension of Essential Cost of Living Support Fund
The Government’s decision to extend the Household Support Fund has been warmly received by Manchester City Council’s Leader, who highlighted the fund’s critical role in aiding those facing severe financial difficulties. Previously set to end in September 2024, the continuation of this fund promises ongoing support for vulnerable households.
From April to September 2024, Manchester City Council received £6.45 million through the fund, which has been utilized to combat fuel and food poverty and assist the city’s most vulnerable households. This funding has supported approximately 70,000 residents, including:
- 44,000 children and young people benefiting from free school meals during holidays
- 29,000 vulnerable households receiving cost of living support payments
- 500 hard-to-reach households receiving additional cost of living support
- 10,000 households receiving food assistance
- 2,000 children and young people engaging in extra Holiday Activity Fund programs
- 250 care leavers receiving a supplemental income
In the previous year, the Council used £12.9 million in funding to aid about 60,000 residents, including support for 40,000 children and young people with free school meals during holidays, 12,500 vulnerable households, and additional assistance to care leavers and those participating in holiday activities.
Council officers will now work on plans for the optimal use of the newly extended funds to continue supporting Manchester’s residents in need.
