Manchester’s Be Proud Awards celebrates the city’s unsung heroes in a dazzling homecoming

Manchester City Council is calling on residents from all corners of the city to put forward nominations to celebrate the exceptional everyday Mancunians who are making a significant impact through their volunteer work and community initiatives.

The prestigious awards are divided into ten categories, covering areas such as enhancing neighbourhood safety, promoting skills and employment, and supporting health and wellbeing.

The Be Proud Awards also recognise the outstanding Pride of Manchester recipient this year, Shakar Hussain, the Chair of Rainbow Surprise. For over a decade, Shakar and his wife Shabnam have been at the forefront of providing essential support to their community, from food drives to free haircuts for children.

Having experienced homelessness himself, Shakar understands the importance of lending a helping hand to those in need. Throughout the pandemic, he and his team tirelessly distributed food parcels and ensured that nobody in their community went hungry.

The winners of this year’s awards span a range of categories, from climate action to tackling poverty, showcasing the diversity of initiatives making a difference in Manchester. The ceremony, held on the 8th of March at the Mercure Hotel, brought together finalists and supporters to celebrate the city’s unsung heroes.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods, commended the dedication of all nominees and winners, highlighting their commitment to creating a fairer, more inclusive city for all residents.
