Local councillors give the green light to initial phase of ambitious Wharfside redevelopment scheme
The initial phase of exciting and ambitious plans to rejuvenate a vast area alongside the Manchester ship canal have been given the green light by Councillors.
Trafford Council’s Executive approved plans for the draft Trafford Wharfside Development Framework and Draft Trafford Wharfside Masterplan to undergo public consultation.
The masterplan envisions the Trafford Wharfside area as a key emerging neighbourhood over the next 15 years. The Wharfside Development Framework has been collaboratively developed by the Council in consultation with major landowning partners such as Peel, Manchester United, and Salford City Council.
The plan has identified several potential development sites and will act as a guide for future, well-designed development in the area. The masterplan prioritises nature and landscape, celebrates the Manchester Ship Canal waterfront and the Imperial War Museum, proposes up to 5,000 high-quality new homes, links Trafford Wharfside to the city centre, and provides a high-quality environment for Manchester United as they progress with their plans for a world-class football stadium.
Following the recent meeting, the public will soon have the opportunity to share their opinions on the strategy in an upcoming consultation.
Councillors were informed that the vision for Trafford Wharfside is to create a community with easy access to all amenities, landmarks, and public spaces. The vision aligns with the Council’s goals of reducing health disparities, lifting people out of poverty, tackling the climate crisis, and establishing a greener, more natural living and visiting environment.
The area will be divided into distinct zones:
– Trafford Wharf – northern portion bordering the Manchester Ship Canal
– Heritage Quarter – adjacent to Trafford Wharf
– Stadium District – Manchester United area
– Innovation Quarter – western area of Wharfside
– Wharfside Heart – connecting the four other character zones
Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive member for Economy and Regeneration, expressed her delight at the Executive’s approval of the consultation launch on the draft Trafford Wharfside Development Framework and Draft Trafford Wharfside Masterplan.
She highlighted the upcoming transformation of Trafford Wharfside over the next 15-20 years, with plans to create a well-designed residential area, green spaces, efficient transport links, and community amenities. The aim is to provide a world-class setting for Manchester United’s stadium and enhance the visitor experience in the historical waterfront area of Wharfside.
In the coming weeks, Trafford Council will initiate a consultation on these proposals, encouraging individuals to voice their opinions.
