Interior Design student wins prestigious Women in Property North West Student Awards.

A Manchester Metropolitan University student has been named the regional winner for this year’s Women in Property North West Student Awards for a project which aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Chanelle Nirale, studying BA Hons Interior Design, impressed the judges with her presentation on her project Pathway, a creative resource and development centre that will combine traditional arts education and more industry-focused arts such as graphic design.

Chanelle said: “As a woman of ethnic minority background, to be recognised not just for who I am, but for the work that I believe in, social sustainability and inclusive spaces, was honestly so validating.

“My lecturers played such a huge part in pushing me to think critically and challenge norms. They’ve really encouraged me to stay true to my values and it’s turned into this impactful and tangible result. Winning this award is such a huge achievement for people from different backgrounds, illustrating that our perspectives can be heard and make a difference.”

The results were announced at awards ceremony this week in Manchester and featured employers from across the property and construction sectors.

The judges praised Chanelle for her confident, well prepared, considered answers and her excellent presentation skills, highlighting the exceptional promise she has shown in her studies and early professional development.

Helen Darnell, Senior Lecturer in Interior Design at Manchester Met, said: “We really can’t think of a student more deserving of the win! Chanelle has demonstrated a consistent commitment to her studies and has produced work of a high standard throughout her first and second year. Her work illustrates thoughtful consideration of user needs and social justice.

“She is a talented designer who responds proactively to feedback and shows an enthusiasm to learn both alongside her peers as well as tutors.”

After winning the regional final, Chanelle will now represent the North West at the national final in London this autumn.

She said: “To have your work recognised on a bigger platform is so important because it goes back to the dream of you can be anything you want to as long as you put in the hard work.

As a woman in this industry and as a young creative in the industry, these awards are extremely validating. It’s a big boost of encouragement.”
