Finding light and connection this festive season

As Christmas lights sparkle across Wigan Borough and homes prepare for festive celebrations, it’s important to remember that this season doesn’t feel the same for everyone. While many see Christmas and New Year as times of joy and togetherness, others may experience loneliness, stress, or grief. Reaching out for support can make a real difference.  You are not alone.

The holidays can feel challenging, with changes to routine, financial pressures, and shorter days adding stress. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, but these feelings don’t define your season. Small, gentle steps like caring for yourself and reaching out to others can help you feel more balanced and connected. Even the smallest actions can make this time brighter.

Loneliness can affect mental wellbeing, but small steps like joining a local event, connecting with friends and neighbours, or reaching out to someone you trust can help . National surveys show that around 6% of adults feel lonely often or always, so if you do too, you’re far from alone.

  • Reach out early: Many friends and neighbours also experience holiday loneliness – a simple text or call can help you reconnect
  • Join local events: Community gatherings such as shared meals or workshops offered by community groups, charities, churches etc continue over the holidays.  Try the local Our Town Directory or connect with Wigan Borough Communities First to find out more
  • Volunteer locally: Giving your time can provide a sense of purpose and belonging, there are many groups in our communities who are on the look-out for new volunteers.  Find out more by visiting Wigan Borough Communities First Volunteering Hub
  • Stay active and social: Group activities like walking clubs or arts and crafts sessions can help build new connections.
