Amer Gaffar, Director of the Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre (MFCIC), has been recognised for his outstanding leadership, taking home two awards at TheBusinessDesk.com North West Leadership Awards 2025.

The event, held at the Midland Hotel, celebrated individuals who have made a significant impact within their organisations and industries. Amer and colleagues hosted senior leaders from some of our key partners in the North West business community (Bosch, Bouygues, Deloitte, Enspec Power and Greater Manchester Combined Authority).

He was also the only person from a university to be shortlisted and the only nominee to appear in three categories – a testament to his contributions to the university and the wider region.

Professor Steve Rothberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the University’s Environment Strategy Group, praised Amer’s achievements, saying: “Amer’s leadership and dedication to sustainable innovation are truly inspiring. His work at MFCIC is not only transforming the clean energy sector but also positioning Greater Manchester as a leader in hydrogen technology. These awards are well-deserved recognition of his impact.”

The judging panel commended Amer for his visionary leadership, dedication to sustainability and ability to inspire change. Through his work at MFCIC, he has played a key role in fostering partnerships with SMEs, researchers and policymakers to drive clean energy innovation.

Reflecting on his achievement, Amer said: “These awards are not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collaborative efforts of my colleagues and partners.
