Anti-racism charter
By Councillor Nazia Rehman, cabinet member for finance, resources and transformation
In recent years, Wigan Council has been making significant progress – alongside our community partners – in addressing inequalities and promoting inclusion.
This has been underlined by our partnership’s commitment to our Progress with Unity missions.
Unfortunately, this year has seen some periods where our entire nation’s social cohesion has been made vulnerable by those who wish to polarise us and divide us. Particularly during the weeks following the Southport tragedy.
At our most recent cabinet meeting (19 December), my colleagues and I voted in favour of the adoption of a new charter that represents a significant milestone for our approach to tackling inequality and discrimination.
The Anti-Racism charter will outline our commitment to be a leading example and focus on positive change. We, as the local authority and as elected members, have a duty of care to do this, not only towards our employees but also to the wider public.
Addressing the council chamber during the cabinet meeting, I said:
“We must ensure that we actively seek to eliminate the discrimination, harassment and victimisation based on gender, physical ability, mental capacity, race, colour, and religion and ensure that everybody feels confident and comfortable with who they are.
“I also think that this is an ideal time for us at Wigan Council, not only that we have just embarked on our new journey through Progress with Unity, but it is also a crucial time because the world is getting more and more polarised, more divided.
“And some people find it real convenient to stereotype people, stereotype others, victimise others, label others so they have a target they can direct their anger and frustration to. It is not right, and we are not going to let it happen in Wigan Borough.
“So, I think this charter provides that framework where we can build on the vital, critical work that is happening regarding equality and inclusion in this borough.”
Our initial Anti-Racism Charter will be adapted and reviewed as we move forward, as we recognise that establishing an anti-racist organisation and borough is a continuous journey requiring dedication, openness and resilience.
The adoption of this charter is significant step in the right direction.
