Cabinet member calls for a “safer night out for all” ahead of Levy vote
Proposals to introduce a Late Night Levy in Bolton town centre will be decided by a vote at Full Council on October 9.
The Levy, if approved, will apply to premises licensed to sell alcohol or late-night refreshment in the town centre between 3am and 6am.
The Levy amount is set by the government, with larger establishments expected to pay more.
The revenue would support both the police and the council to tackle crime, antisocial behaviour, and litter.
It would also help fund other initiatives associated with the operation of the night-time economy.
There would be an offer for premises, free of charge, to vary their licences and opt out of the 3am to 6am period.
Cllr Sue Haworth, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said:
“Everyone has the right to feel and stay safe on a night out.
“The Levy would raise vital revenue to fund the ongoing activities of both the police and council to support the night-time economy.
“This would mean reducing or preventing late night alcohol‐related crime, disorder, and nuisance, and improve public safety.
“We want Bolton town centre to be a more welcoming and a safer night out for all and I would encourage members to support this initiative.”
The Late Night Levy proposal will go to Full Council for final approval on 9 October 2024.
The start date for the Levy is proposed to be February 1, 2025.
