Ordinary Oldhamers, Extraordinary Lives: Celebrating 175 Years of the borough’s people

Do you know someone extraordinary?

Remarkable stories involving every day local people will take centre stage this year as part of the 175th Anniversary celebrations for the borough of Oldham.

Oldham Council is launching the ‘Ordinary Oldhamers, Extraordinary Lives’ project to celebrate some of the remarkable individuals who have lived in the borough over the years, including current residents.

Residents of Oldham, as well as people from across the country, are invited to inform the Council about individuals whose lives have featured something particularly special, unusual, or noteworthy, so they can be honoured in style during this special year.

Please nominate stories using our simple online form:

You can provide as much or as little information as you have about the person and their story, and you may also upload a photo if available.

The Ordinary Oldhamers, Extraordinary Lives project aims to uncover and highlight the remarkable stories of people from across the town, whether from the past or present, who have done or experienced something truly extraordinary.

Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “Let’s shine a spotlight on the incredible individuals who make up Oldham’s communities today, and who have experienced or achieved something very special in our proud history.

“This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the diversity and richness of Oldham’s history through the eyes of its people. I hope residents of all ages around the borough will participate and tell us about those past and present who have remarkable stories to share.”

With the assistance of district teams, schools, residents, and people from across the country who have connections to Oldham, the Council aims to collect and share the inspiring tales of Oldhamers who have experienced something unique, achieved something special, or made a significant impact.

Residents are encouraged to get involved by submitting stories about Oldhamers and their extraordinary experiences so they can be shared with the rest of the borough. Whether it’s a story of bravery, a great-grandparent, family, community service, remarkable achievements, overcoming personal challenges, or an unexpected event or brush with fame—we want to hear about it.

Throughout the year, selected stories will be featured in various formats, including online articles and social media posts, to ensure that the legacy of these extraordinary individuals is celebrated widely. The project will culminate in a special celebration and showcase of the stories at the end of 2024—the 175th year of Oldham’s history.
