Have your say regarding the proposed blueprint for Oldham’s prospective destiny
An opportunity has arisen for people throughout the borough to voice their opinions on the future development of Oldham.
The council is currently devising a new Local Plan, a comprehensive document that will steer the growth and progress of Oldham, encompassing areas such as housing, the local economy, and community facilities, up until 2039.
With the assistance of previous consultations, individuals from across the borough have already contributed to the formulation of the plan. It is now in the draft plan stage, and once again, the council is seeking public input.
Cllr Elaine Taylor, Cabinet Member for Housing and Licensing, expressed the significance of the Local Plan, stating, “This is an incredibly important document that will shape the future of Oldham for the next 15 years, including the decision-making process for planning applications.”
“The places we live in, the establishments we work in, and even our local supermarkets – all of these developments have undergone the planning process at some point,” added Cllr Taylor.
“Planning affects numerous aspects of our lives, and this consultation presents an opportunity for you to voice your thoughts on the policies outlined in the Draft Plan, and ultimately shape the future of your town.”
The Local Plan encompasses policies aimed at safeguarding the environment, addressing climate change, and enhancing accessibility for all residents.
Furthermore, it will aid in the development of supporting infrastructure, such as transportation, education, and utilities.
The council is eager to understand what matters most to residents and businesses in order to create buildings, homes, and job opportunities that align with Oldham’s needs.
Various topics are open for discussion, including the built environment, climate change and flood risk, communities, employment and the economy, housing, the natural environment, our town centres, and transportation.
The Local Plan is being prepared in conjunction with Places for Everyone (PfE), the long-term plan devised by nine Greater Manchester councils, focused on job creation, housing, and sustainable growth.
The Local Plan will complement PfE by addressing policies not covered by the framework and providing more specific details on Oldham’s local planning priorities.
The Draft Local Plan Consultation is currently open until 21 February 2024.
The simplest way to participate is by taking part in the online consultation portal, Big Oldham Conversation.
In addition, there will be several drop-in sessions where individuals can obtain more information and express their views in person. Please stay updated on our social media platforms and visit www.oldham.gov.uk/localplanreview for session details, including dates, times, and venues.
