The brand new park, located atop the town’s recently developed Interchange, was officially named ‘Viaduct Park’ by Stockport Council leader, Cllr Mark Hunter, during a special event on Friday, March 1. This name was chosen following a public vote held over the festive period, with thousands of residents participating in the decision-making process.
Residents had the opportunity to vote for their preferred name from a selection of three options by placing tokens at various voting stations around the town centre. ‘Viaduct Park’ emerged as the clear winner and will open its doors to the public on Monday, March 18.
The two-acre park, part of Stockport’s £1 billion town centre regeneration project, will offer a range of amenities including play equipment, community spaces, festoon lighting, and a new connection to the railway station. A variety of events and activities are planned for the opening day, such as storytime sessions, Tai Chi classes, dance workshops, a mindful mile walk, and a scavenger hunt.
Additionally, a mesmerizing Light Show will be featured at the park, illuminating the surroundings with a beautiful display of lights. Cllr Mark Hunter expressed his excitement for the park’s opening, highlighting its significance in Stockport’s ongoing transformation.
The completion of the Interchange development marks the beginning of a momentous year for Stockport, with several major projects underway, including the conversion of Weir Mill into modern apartments and the establishment of a new learning and discovery centre, Stockroom. The Interchange will open to passengers on March 17, ushering in a new era for the town.
