The prestigious Community Rail Awards, now in its 20th year, is set to acknowledge the invaluable efforts of a dedicated army of railway enthusiasts, often comprising volunteers, who tirelessly toil to create welcoming environments at stations throughout Britain. These remarkable individuals also engage with local communities, including schools and colleges, to educate and inspire future passengers, ensuring that our railways remain inclusive, sustainable, and a healthy mode of travel.
Several remarkable groups in Stockport have been selected as finalists for their exceptional contributions. The South East Manchester CRP and Brinnington Station Adopters are contenders for the Best Community Engagement Project, recognized for their outstanding Brinnington Community Engagement initiative. The Friends of Reddish South Station are in the running for the Photo Competition accolade, thanks to their captivating portrayal of community rail through a Tai Chi Evening on the Station Platform. The Friends of Romiley Station have been shortlisted for the Small Projects Award, having crafted a sensory-diverse highlight in the form of the Romiley Station Sign. The Woodsmoor Station Friends have earned a place among the finalists for their exceptional Community Creative Projects and Station Arts, particularly for their remarkable Woodsmoor Station Art Project. Lastly, the Friends of Reddish South Station have been granted the silver-level recognition for their commendable efforts in the It’s Your Station category.
The winners of these sought-after awards will be unveiled during a prestigious ceremony in Swansea on the 18th of March. The event is jointly sponsored by Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales, adding to its grandeur and significance.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, expressed her delight at the nominations, acknowledging the immense dedication displayed by community groups in the borough. She extended her best wishes to all the nominees for the upcoming awards ceremony.
Sarah Morgan, representing the South East Manchester CRP, expressed immense pride in being shortlisted alongside the Brinnington station team and the exceptional volunteers at various stations across Stockport. Morgan emphasized that these remarkable projects would not have been possible without the continued support of Northern, for which they are immensely grateful.
