Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face, and to recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.
An unpaid carer is someone who looks after a family member or friend who could not cope without their support. The person they care for could have a disability, illness, mental health condition, or may need extra help as they grow older. Caring is often part and parcel of family life and close friendships.
Caring can be hugely rewarding, but it can also have an impact on all aspects of your life. Looking after someone without the right information and support can be tough.
The 2021 Census shows:
- there are more than 18,200 carers in Bury.
- 4.5% of Bury residents (aged five years and over) reported providing up to 19 hours of unpaid care each week.
- 2.9% provided more than 50 hours every week.
It’s why we are proud it is one of the council’s protected characteristics which means we put in the extra effort and recognition necessary to support residents.
Bury Carers Hub
Bury Carers Hub provides information, advice and a wide range of specialist support services designed to help adult carers, caring for someone 18+, continue in their caring role, for as long as they choose, and reduce the impact the caring role can have on their own health and wellbeing.
During Carers Week, the Hub has organised a number of events to support carers. But it’s not just about one week and there are activities and support all year round.

Bury Young Carers
Bury Young Carers work with young people from 7-18 years of age. Our offer is to provide sessions and activities where young people can make friends, learn new skills, have a break from their caring role and have plenty of fun!
Activities range from online baking to 3-day workshops such as drama & music to trips out to the cinema, bowling, laser quest and Gulliver’s World to name but a few.
We work with Bury Youth Service, our Charity ‘Friends of Bury Young Carers’ and volunteers who all help with the running of sessions.
We offer one to one support to young people and have delivered sessions in primary schools to help the young carer gain a better understanding of their parent’s illness or disability.
