More Than 20,000 Cigarette Packs Seized in Manchester as Man Arrested

Police have seized more than 20,000 packets of suspected illicit cigarettes in Harpurhey, with the consignment estimated to be worth at least £400,000.

The discovery was made shortly before 7pm after officers received information about two suspicious vans travelling through the area. Police attended and located both vehicles, which were subsequently searched.

Officers found a substantial quantity of suspected illicit cigarettes inside the vans. More than 20,000 packets, each containing 20 cigarettes, were recovered. Based on an estimated value of £20 per packet, the total haul is believed to be worth upwards of £400,000.

A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing smuggled goods. He remains in police custody for questioning as enquiries continue.

Greater Manchester Police are now working with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Trading Standards to investigate the suspected illegal cigarette operation.

Authorities warn that illicit and counterfeit tobacco products can pose additional health risks because their contents may differ from those of legally sold cigarettes. The seizure forms part of wider efforts to disrupt the distribution of illegal goods and tackle the trade in counterfeit tobacco products.

Police have not yet released further details about the origin of the cigarettes or where they may have been destined for sale.
