Going to the Match – coming to Bury Art Museum

LS Lowry’s masterpiece ‘Going to the Match’ is going on display at Bury Art Museum as part of a celebratory exhibition around football – from 4 October 2024 to 1 March 2025.

The 1953 painting shows fans arriving for a Bolton Wanderers game at their former home, Burnden Park.

Also on display will be iconic photographs of football fans of various teams from the North West, such as Bury FC, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Oldham and Bolton.

Bury Art Museum has collaborated with the British Culture Archive, photographers Debs Parr, Richard Davis, Zoe Hitchen and Phil Hill to bring an exciting perspective on what it means to be a football fan. Also on display with be artefacts loaned by Bury Football Club fans.

‘Going to the Match’ was purchased for a record £7.8 million by The Lowry in Salford in 2022. The venue is now working with venues across the North West to ensure that the piece can be enjoyed by audiences across the region, thanks to a £95,000 grant from Arts Council England through its National Lottery Project Grants programme and additional support from The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.
