A successful pilot scheme offering free mobile SIM cards to those unable to afford internet access has been extended and is available from Bury’s libraries.
So far, they have helped over 250 residents get online by providing them with free sims loaded with internet data, texts and call minutes.
The sims have been donated by Vodafone, Three and Virgin Media O2 through the National Databank in partnership with the Good Things Foundation and can give at least 12 months of free support.
You can qualify for data from your local library if you are a resident of Bury, over 18, are from a low-income household, and meet one of the following criteria:
- have no access or insufficient access to the internet at home
- have no or insufficient access to the internet when away from home
- cannot afford your existing monthly contract or top up
To request a SIM card, please call into your local library, taking one form of ID showing your name and address.
Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “The National Databank is like a foodbank but for mobile data, providing free mobile SIM cards to help digitally excluded people get connected.
“Internet access is increasingly essential for modern life – from job hunting and banking to staying connected to family and friends. By providing internet connectivity, the initiative aims to reduce poverty and income inequality, empowering individuals to improve their lives. It’s really easy to get a SIM card – just drop into one of our libraries and ask for one.”
