Work has finally commenced to demolish an unsightly and dilapidated building in Trafford, all thanks to the efforts of Trafford Council! The Council took legal action against the owners of Charlton House, located on Chester Road in Old Trafford, as they failed to address the deteriorating state of the building situated next to Trafford Town Hall.
In 2020, Mastcraft Limited, the company responsible for Charlton House, received a notice under Section 215 of the Town and Country Planning Act, demanding either the restoration or demolition of the structure. The company faced fines on two occasions, and with the looming possibility of a third prosecution, they finally made the decision to hire a demolition firm to bring down Charlton House.
The demolition process is expected to be completed within the next few weeks, after which the site will be redeveloped as a significant location within Trafford Council’s Civic Quarter Area Plan.
Back in February of last year, the Executive approved the Council’s plans to combat hazardous, incomplete, and vacant developments in the borough through strict enforcement measures.
Councillor Liz Patel, the Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration at Trafford Council, expressed her delight at the long-awaited demolition of Charlton House. She extended her gratitude to all the hardworking officers who contributed to this achievement. For several years, this building has stood in a deplorable condition despite its prominent position next to the Town Hall and both Old Trafford stadiums.
“We will not tolerate such neglect of buildings within our borough. The Council will not hesitate to take legal action against owners who disregard the safety and upkeep of their properties. I eagerly anticipate the redevelopment of this site as part of the Civic Quarter Area Action Plan,” stated Cllr Liz Patel.
