Stretford’s regeneration reaches a significant milestone

Exciting multi-million pound plans to revamp Stretford town centre have reached a significant milestone.

Trafford Council has begun the process of demolishing the vacant probation centre on Lacy Street to pave the way for new homes. These new homes, which will include affordable housing, are part of the wider masterplan for Stretford town centre and will be constructed on the sites of the probation centre, the adjacent car park, and the former post office.

Lacy Street serves as a key entrance into the town centre, facing the Bridgewater Canal. Other proposals for the area aim to enhance access to the canal-side, improve public spaces, and support the development of new residential and commercial properties.

The approved masterplan outlines the construction of up to 800 homes around Stretford Mall, St Matthews Church, and Lacy Street. Emphasising sustainability and the preservation of the high street, the plans focus on creating pedestrian-friendly spaces and new walkways to improve foot traffic in the area.

Additional green spaces, such as public squares and open areas, are planned, including a green biodiversity corridor and a ‘Central Park’ at the heart of the town centre, leading to an enhanced experience along the Bridgewater Canal. Collaboration with partners Bruntwood is ongoing to rejuvenate nearby Stretford Mall, while public realm works at the Kingsway and Barton Road junction are already underway to enhance safety and greenery.

Cllr Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, was present to witness the commencement of the demolition work at the probation centre. He expressed his enthusiasm for the future of the development and the plans to create new spaces and open up the canal. Trafford Council remains fully dedicated to the regeneration and revitalisation of town centres, with Stretford being no exception.
