Wigan Borough sees Covid-19 memorials begin to form

In Wigan Borough, the groundwork has begun for two Covid-19 remembrance sites. These Places of Reflection, located in Mesnes Field, Wigan, and Lilford Park, Leigh, will provide a special place to honour the sacrifices and contributions made during the pandemic.

Despite adverse weather conditions, Wigan Council’s partner organisations are working hard to ensure that the sites are ready by late 2024. The areas will feature accessible memorial spaces surrounded by landscaping and floral displays, as well as rainbow-style seating areas with inspirational words and reflections.

Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, expressed his encouragement at seeing the project progress, acknowledging its importance to residents. Funding for the project has been provided by Wigan Council, section 106 developer proceeds, and the borough’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The Places of Reflection were first proposed in 2021, with stars laid on Believe Square in Wigan and Leigh Town Hall to honour NHS staff and key-workers. A public consultation helped determine the locations and designs, with input from young people at Wigan Youth Zone inspiring some of the creative work.

Jon Hutchinson, Director of Communities at Groundwork, highlighted the project’s reflection on the local community’s contributions during the pandemic. He noted the importance of green spaces in maintaining health and wellbeing, emphasizing that the sites were designed by and for the community.

Hardscape and Safer Sphere, two of the project’s partners, expressed pride in their involvement in creating lasting memorials and ensuring health and safety at the remembrance sites. The sites aim to provide spaces for reflection and tribute to those who are no longer with us.

As the works progress into the spring and summer months, Wigan Borough looks forward to the completion of these special Places of Reflection. For more information, visit www.wigan.gov.uk/Resident/Leisure/Parks/Places-of-reflection.aspx.
