Bury

Vital details for the forthcoming elections

All residents of the borough are set to receive vital information regarding the upcoming elections later this year.

Letters will be dropping through letterboxes in the coming days to remind voters about the various polls, deadlines for being on the electoral register, obtaining a postal vote, and the requirement for photo ID if voting in person.

On Thursday 2 May, elections will be held for Bury Council and the Greater Manchester Mayor. Additionally, a General Election is also expected sometime this year.

For all of these elections, photographic identification is necessary when voting in person at a polling station. Acceptable forms of ID include a passport, driving licence, blue badge, certain concessionary travel cards, and more. Failure to provide photographic ID in the correct name could result in being unable to vote.

For further information on accepted forms of photo ID, visit electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID or call their helpline on 0800 328 0280. Alternatively, if you do not possess any listed photographic IDs, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate from the Government.

In the Bury Council elections, one seat in each of the borough’s 17 wards will be up for election. Candidates will be revealed on Monday 8 April 2024, alongside those for the GM Mayoral election.

To vote in these elections, you must be on the electoral register. The deadline to register is midnight on Tuesday 16 April 2024. To register, visit https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Postal voting is also an option, with applications needing to be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday 17 April 2024. A proxy vote can be requested for someone trusted to vote on your behalf, with the deadline being Wednesday 24 April 2024.

For those unable to physically vote on the day, an emergency proxy vote can be requested by 5pm on the day of the election. Contact the elections team on 0161 253 5252 or email [email protected].
