Stockport Council commemorates White Ribbon Day

Stockport Council is taking a stand against violence towards women and girls as part of White Ribbon Day 2023.

White Ribbon is a global campaign that encourages people, especially men and boys, to act and change the behaviour and culture that leads to abuse and violence.

On Friday, 24 November, Stockport Council will raise the flag in front of Stockport Town Hall to mark support of White Ribbon Day on Saturday, 25 November, the internationally recognised day for ending men’s violence against women and girls. This event is kickstarting with a conference on Friday, 24 November with 200 colleagues across the partnership attending, signalling the commencement of the international 16 Days Against Gender-Based Violence.

As an accredited organisation, Stockport Council is part of a nationwide network committed to dismantling harmful cultures that perpetuate inequality and harmful behaviours. The Council is thrilled to announce a series of upcoming webinars hosted by White Ribbon UK. These webinars delve into the crucial topics of the importance of male allyship, practical strategies for stopping violence before it starts, and issues related to violence against women and girls.

Councillor Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “We take great pride in our White Ribbon accreditation and remain steadfast in our commitment to drive awareness, education, and advocacy for meaningful change against the harm of women.

“We firmly believe that the only path to change lies in promoting continued education of respect and tolerance towards women, setting an exemplary standard for all, which is why it is so important to promote and attend White Ribbon UK’s upcoming Webinars. We aim to proactively combat domestic abuse and create a zero-tolerance stance across the borough.”
