Community Fund backs local initiatives in neighbourhood activities

Fifty-eight voluntary groups from all corners of Bury have triumphed in their applications for support from the LET’S Do It! Community Fund. This funding will be used to back a variety of activities, ranging from exercise programs to e-learning initiatives and from mental health support to community meals.

Bury Council has set aside £100,000 from its budget to support crucial community endeavors in each neighborhood, aligning with the priorities of the ‘LET’S Do It! Community Strategy’. Over 80 applications were submitted by voluntary and community groups throughout the borough. The allocation of funds was determined through a combination of evaluations by the Bury Voluntary & Community Faith Alliance, public services in each neighborhood, including Six Town Housing, Public Health, and the Beacon Services, as well as input from ward councillors.

The successful applications encompass a Winter Youth Club, Winter Warmers Lunch clubs and community café schemes, digital inclusion initiatives including the expansion of a homework club, targeted physical activity sessions for marginalized communities, tailored support for individuals with learning disabilities, classes to improve reading skills, programs to uplift isolated young people and provide free sports, environmental improvement projects to enhance walking routes and accessibility, and initiatives to boost civic pride.

Councillor Richard Gold, the Cabinet Member for Communities and Finance, expressed his delight at the number and variety of applications received for the LET’S Do It! Community Fund, highlighting the incredible range of activities that these groups undertake to support local residents.

He thanked all those involved in these groups and the wider voluntary and community sector for their efforts throughout the year and encouraged everyone to get involved in local community activities. Further details about the successful schemes and how to get involved will be shared soon.

In the meantime, you can learn more about community groups in your area through The Bury Directory and make volunteering your new year’s resolution.
