Salford Sexual Health Service Welcomes Fresh Provider

  • Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) has taken charge of the sexual health service in Salford starting from 1 January 2024
  • Previously, the service was provided by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust
  • The aim of the service is to combat the increasing levels of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Salford

Starting from the beginning of the year, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) has assumed responsibility for the sexual health service in Salford. Managed by Manchester Royal Infirmary, the service is now known as the Northern Contraception, Sexual Health and HIV Service. It offers a comprehensive and integrated provision for teenagers and adults of all ages, delivered by experienced sexual health professionals.

The service provides support, advice, and treatment through open access to confidential and non-judgemental sexual health services. It will continue to be available at Lance Burn Medical Centre in Pendleton and various satellite sites across the city. The sexual health teams offer testing, treatment, support, advice, and education through community clinics.

This change in service provider follows feedback from users and an increase in the number of residents accessing the sexual health service. The requirements of the service have been redesigned, and after a successful tender process, MFT was awarded the contract in autumn 2023.

Councillor John Merry, Lead Member for Adult Social Care and Health at Salford City Mayor, stated: “This service is essential for many people in the city, and it is crucial that we get it right. We will be working closely with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust to improve this service for our residents.

We are aware of the sexual health issues in the city that need urgent attention. By establishing this new service, we aim to address these issues head-on and prioritize providing the best service to those in need.

I am confident that this new partnership will be successful in providing people with the right help and support they need and ultimately reducing the high levels of STIs in the city.”

\”By leveraging our existing relationships with health and social care providers in Salford, we will be able to reach those most vulnerable to sexual health-related harm. We look forward to collaborating closely with Salford City Council to deliver a service that addresses the health inequalities identified in the region.\”

Dr Anna Garner, Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine at The Northern, said: \”We understand the challenges faced in the region regarding sexual health, and The Northern has been providing expert advice and treatment for the communities we serve since 2016.

\”Through access to our services, I am confident that we can make a real impact in improving the quality of care for Salford residents.\”

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust will continue to provide HIV treatment and care services in Salford.
