Leigh’s Hidden Stories Unveiled in Spectacular Local Artists Showcase

A brand-new art exhibit showcasing the local people and places of Leigh has just opened at The Turnpike Gallery. This captivating display, entitled Creating Place II, features the impressive work of four talented artists from the borough. Nicolette Lafonseca, Julie McKiernan and Corrie Shelley, Helen Mather and Anna FC Smith, and Joe Kiney Whitmore all contribute their unique pieces to this exhibition.

Councillor Chris Ready, the cabinet member for culture at Wigan Council, expressed his excitement about Creating Place II. He praised the exhibition for its ability to uncover the fascinating stories of the borough’s past, present, and future through various artistic mediums. What makes this exhibit truly special is that all the artworks were created in collaboration with local residents. The council takes immense pride in its commitment to culture, allowing its residents to partake in this extraordinary journey.

The artworks on display draw inspiration from the people and places in the surrounding area. From the exquisite stained glass windows in Leigh Town Hall to the serene beauty of Bickershaw Country Park, the exhibit captures the essence of these local gems. Additionally, the artists were influenced by the care homes in Leigh and the bustling streets surrounding the Turnpike Centre.

Creating Place II was made possible through funding from the Arts Council England National Lottery and Wigan Council. The Turnpike Gallery welcomes visitors to explore the exhibit from Tuesday to Friday, between 10am and 4pm, and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. Admission to this captivating exhibition is free and will run until Saturday, March 30.
