MAN v FAT Football arrives in Bury for no cost after massive triumph among men in Greater Manchester

A new club aimed at helping overweight and obese men in Bury get fit and make healthier lifestyle choices is set to kick off on Tuesday 2 April. Thanks to a partnership with the local council, free spots are up for grabs for men looking to tackle excess weight.

Over the past year, MAN v FAT Football has assisted 450 men in Manchester in shedding over one tonne of excess weight at clubs across Greater Manchester, including Bolton, Salford, Stockport, and Wigan.

The new Bury club will meet at Radcliffe FC’s Neuven Stadium on Tuesday evenings from 7pm, starting on 2 April, in collaboration with Bury Council’s Bury Live Well Service.

The council’s partnership will enable men from specific postcodes in the area to participate in a free 14-week season funded by the council.

Public Health England data from April 2023 shows that 64 per cent of adults in Bury are overweight or obese.

MAN v FAT Football, designed for men with a Body Mass Index above 27.5, boasts over 8,000 players in 150 clubs nationwide. Players have collectively lost over 630,000 pounds.

During each session, players are weighed, play 30-minute six-a-side football games, and are awarded goal bonuses based on weight loss. League positions are determined by a team’s combined weight loss and match scores.

Councillor Tamoor Tariq, cabinet member for adult care, health and wellbeing at Bury Council, emphasised the programme’s aim to reduce health inequalities and promote healthier lifestyles.

In addition to football, MAN v FAT players receive off-the-pitch support with healthy meal ideas, fitness tips, and access to an online gym.
