Lou Cordwell OBE assumes the role of Professor of Innovation and Special Advisor

Lou Cordwell OBE has been selected as the Professor of Innovation at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR), which is part of Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS). In addition to this prestigious role, she will also serve as a Special Advisor to the Office of the President and Vice-Chancellor.

Prof. Cordwell’s responsibilities will involve offering strategic guidance on innovation ecosystems to the University and contributing to the work of MIOIR and AMBS.

She will collaborate with leaders throughout the University to provide advice on how to enhance the University’s role as a major driver of the region’s economy. This includes strengthening existing relationships and establishing new collaborative partnerships with local and national government, businesses, and other external stakeholders.

Lou began her career at WPP before founding the digital design studio magneticNorth (mN) based in Manchester. In 2021, mN merged with Fluxx to form Magnetic, the UK’s leading design and innovation consultancy. Lou continues to serve as the Chief Creative Officer at Magnetic.

Over the past two years, she has been dedicated to developing a team and creating a strategic masterplan for ID Manchester, an ambitious Innovation District project in Europe.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell expressed her delight at Lou joining the University of Manchester. She emphasized the immense value of Lou’s experience as an entrepreneur and innovator, as well as her advocacy for Greater Manchester on a national and international level. This appointment will further strengthen the University’s position as a catalyst for prosperity in the region and the UK.

Head of AMBS Professor Ken McPhail also highlighted the significance of innovation in the school’s mission. He recognized the importance of incorporating innovation and responsibility into teaching, learning, and engagement with the business world. Lou’s appointment and involvement with colleagues and students will aid in redefining business through the lens of innovation and responsibility.

Lou also serves as the Chair of Greater Manchester’s Business Board (LEP) and is an angel investor, with a particular focus on supporting female tech founders. In recognition of her contributions to the creative and digital economy, Lou was awarded an OBE in the 2018 New Year’s Honours.
