Funding available for community schemes to tackle hate crime

Community groups across Wigan Borough can play their part in tackling hate crime and reducing violence thanks to new funding.

Voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations are being encouraged to bid for cash to deliver targeted activities or campaigns as part of Greater Manchester’s Hate Crime Awareness Week in February.

The initiative is being launched this week by Wigan Borough’s Place and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) with up to £1,000 available for individual bids.

Councillor Dane Anderton, portfolio holder for police, crime, and civil contingencies, said: “Working alongside our partners, the PCSP is making great progress in boosting community safety across our borough and we’re continuing to target, prevent and reduce hate crime.

“There’s no doubt that hate crime can have a devastating impact on victims and their families.

“This funding pot from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority gives local groups an opportunity to make an impact and make positive changes within their community, helping us all feel safe both at home and online.

“I would like to encourage anyone who is a victim of hate crime to know they are not alone, and help is always available by visiting our web page.”

The funding will be awarded to projects that will raise awareness of hate crime, encourage reporting and promote access to support networks.

Awards of £500 are available to schemes to be held during the Greater Manchester awareness week (5-12 February).

The £1,000 award will be for projects that can be run throughout February 2024.

Funding applications close on Friday 17 November.
